I stand by my previous comments that this GREAT project deserves to succeed and, given time, it will. The Gateway Bridge was described by many, including a certain Brisbane newspaper as a "White Elephant" when it first opened.
That same certain Brisbane newspaper cannot write enough negative comments on this GREAT project. Its writers seem to salivate every time they can point out the soft usage figures the Clem7 has experienced since opening.
The State Govt was unhelpful from day 1 and this is evidenced by access and signage, particularly on the M1.
Everyone should remember, the project is an INFRASTRUCTURE project, we are talking a LONG-TERM project here and clearly the ramp-up stage is going to take longer than expected.
The project was deliverd on budget and ahead of schedule.
I have no-doubt, when the AirportLink is up and running the Clem7 will enjoy a considerable surge in useage.
Further:
- Signage still needs to be addressed - the co has previously advised me they are working on it - let's move guys!!!
- The original traffic study needs investigation, which I believe one the bankers is on to. Perhaps everyone was a little optimistic with early usage figures.
- Discount tolling should have been for all of 2010 from the day it opened!
- Marketing has never been great. Maybe a little more imagaination, ie, use it 10 times between say Mon-Fri and the rest is free...a monthly rate....
- The tunnel is there now and deserves to succeed - it comes down to the bankers being prepared to stay the course.
Building traffic numbers is the game now, if the bankers see the traffic numbers moving north, they will be more comfortable with staying committed for the long-term.
We are in an impressive boat, but its got a leak, lets all start bailing water in the short term and plugging the hole for the long run....
