    Motopia a long haul

THERE'S not much appetite out there for rolling the dice on highly speculative penny stocks, but one regular reader emailed to say he has not been able to resist taking a position in mobile phone marketer Motopia (MOT).

Motopia for not much longer, actually. The company is rebadging as AusBase Minerals and has acquired copper-nickel-gold in Cyprus. There are, it says, drill-ready targets with historic assays of up to 19.06 per cent copper and rock chip samples with high gold values.

As New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art points out in its history of the Bronze Age, Cyprus was famous in antiquity for its copper. In fact, they tell us, the word "copper" is derived from Kupros, the ancient Greek name for the island.

Cypriots first worked copper in the fourth millennium B.C. and later imported tin to blend with the red metal to produce bronze.

More recently, the island in 1916 saw the creation of the Cyprus Mining Corp (now part of the giant Freeport-McMoRan). And even more recently, the former Oxiana drilled there in 2007 when it hit copper, zinc and gold.

MOT stock is trading at 0.7c with a market cap of $4 million, which reflects the very long haul ahead for this junior.

Probably not for the risk-averse. As Dirty Harry would say, you just have to ask yourself "Do I feel lucky?"
