03/12/2019Tanbreez Mining Greenland A / S (Tanbreez) has an exploration permit for an occurrence with the mineral eudialite at Killavaat Alannguat between Narsaq and Qaqortoq. The mineral eudialite has a high content of the elements niobium, tantalum, zirconium, and rare earths, which include: can be used in alloys and catalysts as well as in mobile phones, wind turbines and rechargeable batteries. In addition to eudialyte, the incidence contains the feldspar and amphibole minerals. These are minerals that are soluble in nature and are closely related to feldspar and amphibians in many other places in the world. are found as sand in beaches etc.
Tanbreez's plan is to break 500,000 tonnes of ore per year. This can happen like quarrying a quarry. The broken stones will be crushed. With magnetic separation, the ore is divided into red (eudialite), white (feldspar) and black (amphibole) minerals. Tanbreez has a desire to ship the red eudialite minerals to a process plant abroad, where eudialysis by, for example, using sulfuric acid will be separated into individual elements and the salable elements sold.
Like many other mining projects, there is a risk that the project may fail. Since there is not yet a method for separating eudialite, there is a particular risk for this project. Therefore, Tanbreez works with a relatively small production in the beginning to be able to develop the project as optimally as possible. If the production goes well, the production can be extended.
Tanbreez and the Department of Raw Materials and Labor Market are currently in a concrete and constructive dialogue on Tanbreez's detection and delimitation of a commercially exploitable occurrence, which is a prerequisite for notification of an exploitation permit, cf. the Mineral Resources Act. When implementing the project, account must be taken of the fact that construction, exploitation and decommissioning activities must be carried out in accordance with the best international standards with regard to eg. safety, health, environment, resource utilization and social sustainability.
Naalakkersuisoq for Raw Materials and Labor Market, Erik Jensen, says: “ This is a clear-cut mining project that can have a lifetime of decades if everything goes well. There is a great need to reverse the stagnation in South Greenland for growth. Therefore, we must do our utmost to ensure that this project can benefit Greenland, for the municipality of Kujalleq and for Tanbreez. It is Naalakkersuisut's goal to create jobs and society gets the most profit from the project . ”
Mayor of the municipality of Kujalleq, Kiista P. Isaksen, says: "The municipality of Kujalleq is looking forward to the efforts to establish mining production for Tanbreez. Since 2014, the municipality has had a clear goal of getting as much as possible out of mining projects. It is not just about jobs, but also about participating as much as possible in servicing the mine. The possibility that companies in the municipality can secure service contracts is an element for successful business development. Here's a chance to turn the negative spiral inside the municipality , "Mayor Kiista P. Isaksen says.
Director Greg Barnes of Tanbreez Mining Greenland A / S states: “ It is with great relief that we can now see the Tanbreez project finally moving forward. We from the Tanbreez team would like to thank Naalakkersuisoq Erik Jensen and especially the help from Municipality Kujalleq and Mayor Kiista P. Isaksen ”.
