The fruit, veg etc section as well as other food (i.e. Bread) wrapped in plastic will stay as they are called 'barrier' bags required under food hygiene laws/needs.
As a matter of interest if they got rid of barrier bags they would have to get rid of Organic produce to remove the risk of cross contamination with non-organic.
Barrier bags are available in SA etc even though plastic bags are not.
