5 power plants crucial

The Energy Department is monitoring the development of five crucial power projects with a combined capacity of 1,035 megawatts that can help avert the impending power supply shortage in Luzon next year.
Energy Secretary Carlos Jericho Petilla told reporters during a forum organized by the Management Association of the Philippines that aside from the 300-MW unit 1 of the Malaya power plant in Rizal which needed to be overhauled early next year, the department was also monitoring the progress of a liquefied natural gas plant in Pagbilao.
Petilla did not name the company but the Energy World Corp’s 200-MW LNG plant was listed as among the critical projects in the Luzon grid.
The department met with EWC officials on Aug. 11 and 19 to discuss the status of the project.
Petilla said the department was also pushing for the early commissioning of the 100-MW Avion natural gas plant by March.  It is also hoping the 135-MW Puting Bato coal plant 1 (135 MW) owned by Trans Asia Oil and Energy Development Corp. in joint venture with Ayala Corp. would start operations by December.
