HONG KONG-based Energy World Corp. Ltd. (EWC) plans to start construction of its 300-megawatt (MW) natural gas-fired power plant in Pagbilao, Quezon by the middle of this year, a company official said.
"We hope to start construction of our 300-MW natural gas power plant by June or July this year," Eduardo T. Rodriguez, EWC country manager for the Philippines, said in a recent telephone interview. "That will take two years so it will be operational by early 2016."
Mr. Rodriguez said the plant will complement the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal hub the company is building in the same area.
"We are currently building our LNG terminal hub. That will involve a 130,000-cubic-meter LNG tank, a regasification facility and some supporting infrastructure. Hopefully, by the end of the year, the terminal hub will be done already," he said. "So we will already have the terminal hub as early as next year. The company will source natural gas from our existing gas fields in Australia and Indonesia."
He said the terminal hub costs around $100 million, while the power plant will cost "around $800,000 per megawatt or around $240 million."
Mr. Rodriguez also noted that the LNG tank and the 300-MW power plant will be the first phase of the company's project in Pagbilao.
"We expect the demand for natural gas to increase, so we will build another 130,000-cubic-meter LNG tank and another power plant."
