Hi nortiba sneerch
Thank you for your reply.
This thread may need some clarification about the definitions of a quant trader vs. a systems trader. My definition of a Quantitative Trader is a hedge fund, using billions of dollars of pc equipment; a fleet of people with PhD?s earning big money. I suspect there are none of these in Perth as they like to be located next to the exchange servers, which for Australia are based in Sydney. The BRW rich list will tell you who runs these quant funds.
These funds have historically make money in ways such as arbitrage, options mispricing, and nanosecond trading providing liquidity.
I am not expecting my vba program to compete against the quants.
A Systems Trader, also called Mechanical Trader differs from a discretionary trader in the fact that he uses strict rules to define when to enter and exit trades, he may use a computer or may not, his trades may last 5 seconds or 20 years, he may be pure fundamental, pure technical or a combination of both. The only thing a systems trader will not use in their trading is human emotion, as this is the realm of the discretionary trader.
The last trader is the discretionary trader, 99% of traders I meet are in this category, they often easily make hundreds of thousand, But for most they go nowhere fast, or give it all back, sure a rare few make millions buying when their gut say buy and without even knowing why. But most of the time they trade based on a combination of fear, greed and panic.
As for your comment of people trading against your strategy, welcome to the world of cfd's where the biggest shark in the tank will win. Where front running and automatic stop hunting are not only legal, but are in the contract. Think twice about setting that stop loss or profit target, because that information will be used against you. Oh.. the fun of leverage.
There are many ways to trade, find the way that suits your personality and you will be profitable. For some that may be a managed fund, for other a slot machine, or anything in between.
PS
No one has ever made money systems trading. It?s impossible, don?t bother trying. But if i do find a way to print money, I will be sure to tell the world about it.
