South Australian business Penrice Soda says the jobs of its 300 employees have been put at risk by the carbon tax.
The company produces soda ash at its Osborne factory which is used to make glass and other industrial chemicals.
Penrice also operates a limestone and marble mine at Angaston in the Barossa Valley and is one of 25 South Australian businesses the Federal Government says will pay the tax.
Chief executive Guy Roberts says the tax could cost the company between $6 million and $8 million in its first year.
He says Penrice needs concessions to survive.
"It's a game breaker for us. It will mean jobs, no question about that. We can't afford to pay that level of tax with relatively little warning either," he said.
"This process and this business is well-established, mature technology. We can't just suddenly within 12 months and find another way to make our chemicals."
The Premier Mike Rann says he will discuss the company's situation with the Federal Government.
"And I'm happy to do so and I'll be raising any concerns when I talk to Federal ministers before this weekend."
Mr Rann says financial assistance is available to the company through the Federal Government's Jobs and Competitiveness Program which accompanies the carbon tax."
