You've just identified a key aspect of any commodities market. Commodities markets are, as RR says, unusually cyclical and unusually capital intensive, which creates these crazy bull and bear markets. Identifying this and acknowledging this is perhaps the greatest thing you can learn if you are to be a long term investor in the commodities space.
