Lead batteries won't be dead until cars are dead. Lead batteries do what they are good at (cheap, long life and right voltage) very well and there just isn't anything new that is likely to replace them.
Lead batteries are in someways like mainframe computers. While we don't think about mainframe computers much but they are still out their doing their jobs and being supported and upgraded.
