As JB suggested - the actual borers are about 5-6 months away from extracting soil to construct the main body of the tunnel. The soil being extracted now is part of the pre works contract that was awarded to John Holland. The main tunnel contract was awarded to a joint venture headed by Lend Lease and has about 1.4 million tonnes of PASS to dispose of according to the EIS and this PASS has to be disposed of as per EES directions - ie either under water or lime treated.
As far as the gold is concerned - Central Victoria is a place where all the major players will want to play in - especially if the KLA Fosterville reserves prove to be as ambitious as they think.
Could be a big year this year
