Look up the difference between PASS and ASS (no. Its not a cheap insult)..
ASS has much more stringent inland (underwater) storage requirements and will likely requir pre-treatment if the storage site is near the water table or an aquifer.
Now, the million dollar question, how much of the contaminated waste will actually be deemed to be PASS And how much will be ASS?
Afterall, according to the government, the vast majority of waste will be 'clean fill' & can be reused.
If ASS is present and requires pre-treatment anyway, a big hole in Negambie may not be the only attractive or cost effective disposal option...
It may be a case that the Government authorities err on the side of caution and dictate that all suspect acid sulfate contaminated waste is pre-treated anyway. If so, it then opens up other disposal options.
it is interesting that the metrotunnel web site avoids any mention of waste management issues in the 'Planning' and 'Construction' sections. Its like they know the waste managent issue is likely to be a contentious one and want to keep it out of the public conciousness for as long as possible
