December a Record Month for Sydney Airport

December 2006 was a record month for Sydney Airport with a total of 2.734 million passengers travelling through the Airport.

This was the busiest month ever at Sydney Airport – an increase of 7.2% on December 2005.

There were 966,000 passengers processed through the International Terminal. The number of Australian travellers increased by 5.8%, while the Ashes supported a 9.9% increase in passengers from the United Kingdom. Other major markets to increase were China 19.6%; Korea 13.7%; India 7.8%; and France 7.3%.

The month of December was notable for two other milestones being reached:

    · Friday 22 December, with 37,181 passengers, was the second biggest day for international travellers recorded at the airport. The busiest ever day remains the day after the 2000 Olympic Games.

    · For 2006 another record was set with the number of domestic and regional passengers reaching 20 million for the first time ever. The annual figure of 20.044 million is a record for any 12 month period.

The CEO of Sydney Airport Corporation, Russell Balding, said that the holiday season is always a busy period with many people travelling to spend time with their families or taking the opportunity to have a break.

“These figures are good news for the Australian tourism industry and all the thousands of people with jobs in that sector.

“A really pleasing part of these results is how well the airport performed in handling these record numbers with no significant disruptions to the services we provide.

“I’d like to congratulate the performance of Sydney Airport’s staff, the government agencies, and our airline partners who all cooperated and worked to ensure a high level of operational performance over this period.

“Handling these record numbers was a good challenge, and the overall performance is a credit to all the staff, organisations, and companies involved,” Mr Balding said.
