The company may not be aware of specific news regarding (for example) new drilling results. Therefore they may be quite right in stating there is nothing new to report. However that doesn't mean someone in a lab somewhere hasn't got a sniff of something interesting and leaked it to 10 of his/her closest friends.
Bottom line is, we don't know what's happening yet, and we shouldn't be assuming it's poor form on behalf of the company directors.
