It's a matter of professionalism. If a business wishes to appear to be more than a Mickey Mouse, fly by night outfit, they require at minimum a very good website, and preferably a complimentary social media presence as well. I can't count the number of times I've looked for something online, seen a lame website and promptly moved on to another vendor who looks more professional.
Even as professional individuals, we are pretty much required to have a presence in that most loathsome of social media platforms, LinkedIn.
