This is actually quite a poor article and an example of shoddy journalism.
First of all, internet advertising has never been better and business is booming. I am in the business and I know.
This fact is even acknowledged by this journalist despite the totally misleading title:
"That pushed total online spending up by 2.9 per cent to $466m -- the biggest quarter on record".
So online advertising spend is actually UP to a record $466M - biggest quarter EVER.
You would have never thought that reading the title: "Online display ads fall for first time!" Shock. Horror.
Internet display advertising is of course different to SEARCH advertising. Display advertising is basically "Banner" advertising on bigger sites. And its no wonder that this is down. Those bigger sites charge a fortune for advertising that is basically ineffective (unless you are looking for branding) and are willing to fork out the bucks. Of course, in a downturn, it is not surprising that display advertising was affected.
So MCU holders, feel free to ignore this crappy article. MCU owns the biggest search advertising company in Australia - and the highly effective, measurable, keyword based, search advertising - is where the money is. And its where smart advertiser keep putting their money in - because it actually WORKS! and it's measurable etc etc..
