This weeks average petrol price in the USA is $3.515 USD/US Gallon
Which is US$0.92857/litre.
or about $1.00 AUD/Litre
Today's Aussie Price is about $1.47
Given that we are overly influenced by Uncle Sam in most areas
then we could over time substitute LPG/CNG without excise
for petrol for 47% of our National fleet and this would then
average the US $1/litre. Even then we would have to import
over 25% of our oil needs.
There is no evidence that US roads and transport infrastructure
is any worse than ours and by above prices, their petrol is way less taxed than ours.
We simply need a clear policy of oil self sufficiency policy with annual targets.
If onshore oil prospecting is not happening now , then we as a country have to give
tax incentives to prospect and find new oil. If as the multinationals say that
there is very little new oil to be found in Aus onshore, then the tax concession will cost is
very little. If the tax concession works then we're off and running towards oil self-sufficiency.
As motorists we are taxed:
- GST on new vehicles (luxury car tax over a certain limit) + import duty on imports
-State based rego
-GST on maintenance and repairs
-51.5c/litre on petrol- duty and GST
Cheers
