But when offsetting against a capital loss no matter how long I have held the shares I have to claim the full capital gain. (No 12mth CGT discount if claiming against a capital loss).
So I wont have to factor in holding time whilst trying to recover and offset my losses. Due to some bad investments I shouldn't have to worry about paying CGT for quite awhile.

Correct! Losing money in itself isn't a bad thing , the main thing is to learn something from it. I wish you luck in the future.
