Wow there truly is no hope for the planet if we are building that many new coal fired power stations. By the hundreds by the looks of it.
The industrial requirements of our society for energy could run off solar, just a lot of it !
If solar and wind and geothermal and wave and hydro and maybe some new ways yet to be discovered are developed at sufficent scale and the battery systems are there to store vast quantities then it could happen. It really is only about the will to get it done.
The leaders of our societies really need to understand the implications here. We (homo sapien) are going down if this continues.
Doing nothing is irresponsible and leadership means doing something first !
There has to be a smarter way to generate electricity than burning coal to heat water to turn a turbine. Same as a woodfire and a billy. Just not smart enough. And it is using far to much water in a country like australia as well.
If solar can eventually power all the homes and cars, then that is going to make a huge difference.
Coal fired power will be around forever, but it simply cannot be the main source of energy. There is NO future for us and the planet in burning that much coal.
The CO2 from the coal fired power stations for the heavy industrial applications (smelting iron, aluminium etc) could be 'captured' and turned back into another fuel, which is possible because I'm invested in a company(VIV) that does this. Then the CO2 can be reduced, then stopped, then reversed, over the coming decades.
If China and India want to sell there products to the west, then some sort of carbon tax/tariff could be applied. Good luck with that. Or they could be persuaded to see the light as well !
Otherwise the future will involve building walls to keep back the ocean. How long will that last ? It's a joke ! It would take a mountain range to hold back the ocean.
It won't happen in our lifetime(20-30 yrs). But it definitely will for our grandchildren. In 30 years at current estimates, if we reach 500ppm then that is 3c hotter. They say 2.3 metres for each degree increase. So 3c is 7 metres. That covers alot of cities.
Where to then people ? You really want to let that happen....not for yourselves but for the whole of humanity.
