Could be handy living next to someone who has a gun the next time some amped up crack head with a screwdriver smashes his way into your home. Better yet you could get one & at least have a chance of defending yourself but you would likely be treated like a criminal for doing so because here in Australia you have no right to defend your home & family. Instead call the police & make the smack head a cup of tea while you wait a few hours for the cops to show up.
The point being i made about correlation is that mass shootings & gun violence seems to be a US specific problem. There is something systemically wrong in the US around gun violence & it cant be solely attributed to gun ownership or the availability of semi automatics otherwise other nations would be reporting similar rates of gun violence. I'd agree that their laws are way too lax and need adjustment but its not the panacea.
Id also like to point out that a bolt action long arms can be used just as effectively as a semi-automatic in the right hands. Bolt actions can be fired & cycled very quickly with minimal accuracy impact. High capacity magazines are more an issue than the availability of semi automatics which is why the NZ laws are focused on military issue hardware & high capacity magazines.

"i should point out that it doesn't need to be a systemic trend of gun violence before we should act because if we can identify a trend its already to late to fix."

By that comment we should have banned commodores years ago. Everyone knows a commodore is a bogans weapon of choice. Could have stopped that Bourke street idiot....
