RedCedar, There we have a rare point of agreement. Islam is young and raw. But we are not living in the middle ages where reform can take centuries. If there is no quick revision of the text of the quran there will be a bloody, bloody war. Already there is a rise of right wing radicalism in Europe and as we have sadly seen in Australia and NZ. My sister-in-law was in Germany recently and she told me the young Germans have just about had enough of Merkel and her welcome mat to Muslims. My sister lives in inner London and in the last 30 years her suburb has become a Muslim enclave. Erdogan is a bigger threat than Hitler. He believes he is the new Muslim Caliphate and if not checked will plunge us into a disastrous world wide conflict. RedCedar you are correct, it may take Islam about another 500 years to become as old and irrelevant as Christianity, but Islam does not have 500 years. In a world of Google, Facebook and multimedia and instant news Islam is seen as a bloody but quaint archaic relic of the old world with no place in the 21st century. Though I might agree with you that islam is a young and relatively vibrant religion I have no intention of waiting 500 years for Islam to grow old and irrelevant like christianity nor an I keen on submitting to Islam because our politicians are stupid and call for appeasement. As history shows the word appeasement means surrender in Islam. Frankly, I don't give a brass razoo about what happens to me in the short term, I am a geriatric, but I am concerned about the world my kids and grandkids will grow up in and it does not look rosy. I was in Dubai before Christmas and speaking with some expats working there, the word is Saudi is running on empty. I hope they are correct. Anyway the thought made for a joyous Christmas. Cheers

Clearly the world will continue to have ructions and religious wars will feature greatly in Europe and the middle East, but regarding Australia IMO long term we will become more Asian as a people. Atrocities will continue but as China enlarges it's sphere of influence Islam is the least of our problems. I have no doubt Australia will be a province of China within a century and depending on how issues such as climate change play out we will be a relatively stable country speaking Chinglish as out primary language. But as you say that will be for future generations to sort out or endure.
