You're contradicting yourself.
The fact that it can't fully cover baseload means it's not in competition with nuclear by definition.
Australia has far more sunny days than many countries that have far higher solar power penetration. For renewables you need a mix of solar, wind and hydro backed by battery tech (grid and domicile) with nuclear providing the backbone and maybe gas on standby for envelope scenarios.
The renewables are scalable far quicker to provide mid term growth and flexibility. Distributed solar with battery on homes plays a vital roll in recharging EVs and taking the edge off the inevitable crazy high peak usage in extreme heat events (which are only going to increase in the coming decade).
