Stock prices are strongly correlated to profits (so in this case, gold price) in the long term. However, in the short term, sentiment and the direction of the rest of the market, are much more dominant.
I and Warren Buffett much prefer holding stocks over commodities, however. Gold doesn't produce any profit on its own. It's price may go up. It may go down. But it doesn't return earnings just sitting there. A stock also may go up or down, but it also should return earnings.
