well may be you should look at Abraxane that sells $1B+. Their composition matter expired 5 years ago. Just for your education, there are plenty of other patents that can protect the compound such as method of use, formulation etc.... Also, again, for your education, FDA provides 12 years of market exclusivity to Biologics during which competition can not launch biosimilars. You should probably stick to your mining investments.
As for the patents and ASX listed companies, just look at small cap darlings like Imugene and Oncosil... their main patents are long gone. Does not prohibit them to be worth 100M+
