Indirect holdings are not in the name of a director. ie they may be in their super fund or in a spouses name.
Other than the managing director of AWE, the directors do not get performance rights. See the annual report for information on the performance rights.
Anyways, irrespective of how they are held, or how they got them, Dawneys letter is wrong.
