underwriters serve a purpose. they are able to come up with capital in a heartbeat. I doubt that most companies' shareholders would be able to raise the kind of capital instos do.
if it were not for sophisticated investors and the like, i think most companies would be struggling if left to orignal investors to take up the slack.
