It was great to read that someone else other than the US Navy has ordered one of the 'standard miliraty ships' (excuse the crude expression, but I mean the HSSV, LCS and JHSV). Even if it is the small ferry-type one.
I am hoping that if Austal builds enough of any of the 3 types of ship, it seems fair to assume that eventually they will start to build them at a good margin. (I hope to see that with the LCS in the US Navy order sometime soon).
ABS's revenue stream and order book are great - we just need ABS to start building these ships at a solid margin. They have been pretty adept at moving from boats to ferries and now to a key provider to the most advanced Navy in the world. Management clearly has a lot of talent. Eventually, that talent will be aimed at margin. Ideally, I will still be around when that happens.
I remain hopeful that if ABS builds enough of any of the 3 ship types, they'll get pretty good at it - and the margin will come in.
That should happen, shouldn't it?? If we could get some volume in on this price bounce I'd be more confident that I'm not missing something.
