"New kid on the block"? Seems like everyone has forgotten about the Ni metal hydride batteries that were prevalent in laptops and also hybrid/EVsv until a few years ago.
Did the decline in Ni price result in part from the transition to lithium batteries? Point to note - technologies can change quickly and when markets are geared up to an expectation of continuing success they can go bad quickly too.
