Welcome to the October 2016 edition of EV company news. There was plenty of exciting EV market news, and September delivered the second best ever EV sales month globally, and the best ever for the US.
Global EV sales - as of end September 2016
Global EV sales recorded their second best month ever in September 2016 with 77,000 sales, up 54% ytd compared to 2015. Global EV sales are still heading towards 800,000 for the year, representing about 1% of the global market share. The best-selling car model globally for 2016 is the Tesla Model S, just ahead of the Nissan Leaf, and the BYD Tang.
China led the way with 31,000 sales in September. Chinese EV sales are up 84% for the first 9 months of 2016 compared to 2015, and are on target to deliver almost 400,000 EVs in 2016, or around 1.5% market share (EVs' share of the total Chinese car market). Current subsidies will start being phased out, reducing by 20% in 2017.
Europe continues to be a strong performer with 24,000 EVs sold in September 2016, 47% higher than the same period in 2015. The Renault Zoe remains the leading seller in Europe.
The US had a record best ever month in September with 16,474 sales, up 67% on 2015 levels. Most importantly the US has now breached the 1% EV market share hitting 1.15%. Tesla Model S is the number 1 seller, with Tesla Model X the number 3 seller.
