I never understand retail punters fascination with shorts? The shorts have been in the green for over a year. Do we all jump in and say - wow the shorts had a good day today - for 12 months? So, after the short sellers may have benefited from a 90% fall in some stocks, a 10% swing back up is just a blip. Remember that a stock short sold at A$10, that goes to A$1 would give 90% return. If that stock then rallies 90% it goes to A$1.9 - hardly hurting the guy that is A$9 in the green.
Short selling is just people betting on downside, maybe as a pure short, but often as a hedge against another ticker or position - or also quite often as collateral for derivative positions.
I seriously feel that concentrating on short sellers to any extent is detrimental to your investment decisions. Probably better looking at sentiment and worrying whether buyers want in or not...
