Lets get to the core of the argument.
Imagine a farmer owned co-op was not there.
Tell me, what would Saputo and Fonterra pay?
What would they base it on.
Here's an example.
Fonterra opens this year at $5.00. Saputo opens at $5.20.
Wow!
Problem is there is nothing to base it on.
They are both profit making entities who have effectively colluded to pay you as little as possible.
Getting back to your other argument, 'wont MG just have to pay more?'
Trouble is, the co-op pays out all that it can anyway. How could it pay more. And taking milk out of its factories means it has to pay less.
Our great grand parents took the big risk to set up their own little co-operatives over 100 years ago. They were being screwed by largely English mutinationals.
They would roll in their graves if they saw what was happening.
Again, a co-op is simply a collective of farmers pooling their milk and controlling the supply chain. It is just the processing extension of our farm which we own!
It has to be nurtured and it must have milk, even though corporates will do everything possible to weaken it.
Again, thankyou for the opportunity to respectfully debate.
