WELLINGTON, Sept 9 (Reuters) - New Zealand electronic retail card spending dipped 0.4 percent in August, while actual sales were up 3.7 percent from the same month a year ago, Statistics New Zealand said on Friday.

The electronic cards data, which covers about 68 percent of core retail sales in the country, is the key measure of monthly retail activity.

Total retail spending was weighed by lower fuel spending, according to Statistics New Zealand.

"The lower fuel price means people are spending less at the pumps", Statistics New Zealand business indicators senior manager Neil Kelly said.
