I work with major retailer and have worked previously with other retailers.
My 2 cents.
Why Amazon doesn't pose big threat to Australian retailers?

1. Australians consumers are very much used to 'feel and touch' shopping at brick and mortar stores. They are not very fond of online shopping that's why e-Commerce is still a tiny portion of retail.
e-Commerce has been very successful in other countries like India, China & USA.

2. Biggest challenge for Amazon is to build efficient and cost effective supply chain ; our country is geographically vast but tiny population (compare to developing countries like India or China). So Amazon has to really struggle to provide low cost products covering whole country given that labor cost is expensive here .

Having said above, I think it's just matter of time until Amazon cracks the code and spreads it wings here ..but it will take time.
