AFR reported Port Kembla LNG import terminal has been given "Strategic" Status

Where does leave Santos's Narrabri project? and AGL's Crib Pt Project? and the others that have jumped on the LNG import bandwagon ? Even Some talk of some WA LNG going east ?

The AFR article highlighted contention between the AEMO's estimates of what gas is left off the Vic coast and the alarm mongering that has been going on. The AEMO thinks there is quite a bit left and likely to be found so overall there is no problem. Who is right ?

    QUOTE
The Port Kembla Gas Terminal has been declared Critical State Significant Infrastructure (CSSI) by the Minister for Planning because of its importance to the State’s future security and reliability of gas supply.

Australian Industrial Energy (AIE) is proposing to construct a new berth at Port Kembla to accommodate Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) carriers, an LNG handling facility, wharf infrastructure and a pipeline to connect to the existing NSW east coast gas transportation network nearby.

Deputy Premier of New South Wales John Barilaro said if the project was approved, it could supply 70 percent of NSW’s gas demands and put downward pressure on gas prices for families and businesses across NSW.

“The new Port Kembla terminal would allow for the import of cheaper gas that would increase competition and which has the potential to drive down the state’s gas prices,” he said.

Minister for Planning, Anthony Roberts, said: “NSW currently relies on interstate sources for 95 per cent of its gas supply and the Australian Energy Market Operator predicts a significant shortfall in gas supply from existing sources from 2018 onwards.

“This shortfall could be worse if there is a greater reliance on gas fired power generation following the planned closure of the Liddell coal fired power station in 2022.” Minister for Resources and Energy, Don Harwin, said: “This is project is vitally important because it could expand the locally available gas supply in NSW by around 100 petajoules (PJ), which represents over 70 percent of the state’s total gas demand.” he said.

“The project would also be scalable to supply more gas if demand increases over time, and provide up to 12 days of emergency gas supply to address any disruptions in supply from other states.
