Next Generation Trimaran Exceeds Performance Expectations

Austals next generation 102-metre trimaran has impressed during sea trials, achieving a speed of 39 knots at 90% MCR with 340 tonnes deadweight. The high speed vehicle ferry utilises Austals patented trimaran technology to deliver improved sea keeping, fuel efficiency, passenger comfort and payload capacity.

Austal has officially unveiled its trimaran vehicle-passenger ferry platform on 5 June 2009. The new trimaran is an evolution of Austals landmark 2005 trimaran ferry Benchijigua Express. The vessel utilises Austals trimaran technology, combining the softer roll of monohulls with the low resistance, stability and carrying capacity of catamarans, to open up new markets beyond existing fast ferry designs. A lower roll speed means lower accelerations experienced by passengers significantly reducing passenger seasickness.

The trimarans unique hydrodynamic hull form combined with its three engine propulsion train delivers fuel efficiency across a range of operating conditions.

39 knots = 72km/h How good is that? Especially in a 102m boat! and the engines aren't even being pushed to their maximum capabilities
