Perhaps it's because:
1. It already exists
2. It already functions
3. Australia is already one of the worlds largest suppliers of coal
4. Building a new "clean-coal" power station would take almost a decade
5. They've no money available to build a new "clean-coal" power station anyway
6. Even the Government knows that building a new "clean-coal" power station doesn't make any economic sense
7. And finally, as Donald Horne said in his 1964 book, "Australia is a lucky country run mainly by second rate people who share its luck. It lives on other people's ideas, and, although its ordinary people are adaptable, most of its leaders (in all fields) so lack curiosity about the events that surround them that they are often taken by surprise"
When nearly all of our politicians are far too busy looking after their own interests unfortunately our nation's interests often run a distant second. I think that just about sums it up.
