Three years ago our engineers asked themselves - what is the best battery solution for solar or wind storage? The hype around NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) & LIPO (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries, the building of the mega factory by Tesla and Panasonic, the high energy density of LIPO batteries all pointed to them being an excellent solution for solar and wind storage. These batteries were being used in cars and cell phones so why not solar storage? Was there a better option?
We quickly discovered NMC & LIPO based solutions have a number of key problems for use as solar or wind storage, the biggest being their low Depth of Discharge and their relatively short cycle life. For those who are not technical, the Depth of Discharge is how much energy can be extracted from the battery before the battery is harmed and the cycle life is how many times can you charge and discharge the batteries before they are no longer providing a reasonable amount of storage - 70% of their original capacity is industry standard.
NMC & LIPO solutions cannot be deep discharged and have a cycle life of around 3000 cycles before they fall below the 70% threshold. Thus, they last about 8 to 10 years in a solar system assuming they are not used every day and their discharge is limited.
We searched for a better solution and discovered LTO (Lithium Titanate) Batteries. The properties of these batteries were far superior to NMC & LIPO in that they lasted much longer, were safer, could be deep discharged and had much better temperature tolerance. But they had two issues, they were not as energy dense as NMC & LIPO batteries and they were not manufactured in as great a quantity, so their cost was higher.
Over the last three years, we have worked with LTO battery manufacturers and they have achieved remarkable results in both increasing energy density and reducing costs.
The result is we have developed the AEON Battery solution. This product has a warranted 20,000 cycle life to 80% capacity (which is a least 6 times that of NMC & LIPO solutions), can be deep discharged to 100%, is scalable to meet varying demands and needs, is the safest solution on the market and does not require air conditioning.
For home owners, it means effectively they will not have to replace their AEON product as they will last at least 20 years and they can be sure they will get an economic return on their investment.
The AEON Battery is designed for residential use with a solar installation but our team will not stop there. New, large-scale solutions are planned for release in 2019 and beyond.
