Chanticleer examined the top 10 performing stocks in the S&P/ASX All Ordinaries Index to see if there were any obvious themes that were common to the small- and mid-cap companies that shot the lights out in the past year. It is heartening that six of the 10 companies –Nearmap, Afterpay Touch, Appen, Bravura Solutions, Infomedia and IDP Education – have built global software platforms that are experiencing double-digit growth. The success of these companies can be attributed to the creativity and determination of their founders. They have not only developed proprietary intellectual property, they have commercialised it and taken it to the global stage. It says a lot about the entrepreneurial risk-taking in Australia when companies such as Nearmap, Infomedia, Afterpay and Appen are competitive in offshore markets. They have the ability to scale their business models in global markets. The recent capital raising by Nearmap shows that when expansionary capital is required it can be obtained through the ASX.
