I am devoting a chapter to WiMAX VoIP in this book. Why? Because if VoIP has to happen in a market dominated by legacy copper wire and "heavy iron" switches, its market capture as a percentage of the total market, will be glacial. If VoIP is really going to take off, it must access subscribers by means other than telco or cable TV networks. WiMAX is the best alternative means of broadband internet access because it is ³cheaper, simpler, smaller and more convenient to use' relative to any other means of broadband access.
Try $8 per home passed for WiMAX vs. $1500 for fiber to the home (FTTH). One lesson I came away from the WCA show two weeks ago is that VoIP is a given in a WiMAX offering.
Memo to VoIP industry: make all the WiMAX partners you can. Memo to WiMAX community: make all the VoIP partners you can. Its your new channel. If a WiMAX network is going in somewhere, you and your service provider customers should be fighting tooth and nail to ensure that VoIP is all over that network.
