While China seems to be on the ball and doing the right thing in cleaning up its rivers and lakes, here in Australia, we have let the situation escalate to hundreds of thousands and possibly even millions of native fish dead over the span of a few weeks. Can't begin to imagine the scale of devastation to the ecosytem and to local tourism, let alone the smell.
So far, drought and water diversions have been blamed for the algal blooms but it is obvious that only long-term neglect of maintaining the basin has resulted in this issue growing to the size and scale that it is now. A job for PET methinks.
