Options expire and become worthless. Astute investors would probably be looking to offload prior to that however if it didn't look good and if volume permitted. It's funny but there's quite often people willing to buy options that are about to expire.
But yeah, essentially you are at risk of losing everything you invest in options. It's part of the risk-reward balance you need to understand and accept.
