Water Filled Pits do would not have to be drained & couldn't be as it is the water table. It would re-fill as nearly as quick as you'd drain it.
Sulphide Gold is not accessed by 'open pit'. It is at depth and requires access via a road tunnel down to it. So if Gold was 500m under one of the pits, the access road down to it would probably have its entry 1 km away.
Fosterville could have had their entry to the tunnel elsewhere but the bottom of the pit means 50m less depth.
The most likely place for Good Gold grades is looking like being to the west of the pits - closer to the Wandean Crustal Fault. The NND Drill holes.
