LEIGHTON Contractors has won the works contract for the installation of two gas turbine generators, part of a $138 million upgrade to Darwins Channel Island Power Station.
The scope of work includes civil foundation and footing work, structural and drainage work, assembly of the main generation units and balance of plant, all cabling and switchgear, and telecommunications and control systems.
Leighton Contractors Industrial and Energy Division general manager Mark Chilcote said the contract win reinforced Leighton Contractors ability to successfully deliver power generation projects.
We are looking forward to working with the Power and Water Corporation to deliver this additional 90-megawatt generation capacity at Channel Island Power Station, to allow existing plant to be refurbished from next year and cater for growth in electricity demand on the Darwin-Katherine grid, he said.
The project will be fast-tracked with commissioning due to commence in February 2011.
