Drillers find two major gas fields in North Sea

Two major gas finds have been made in the southern North Sea off the coasts of Norfolk, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire.

Dana Petroleum said a test well had found an estimated 130 billion cubic feet of gas about 80 miles north of the terminal at Bacton in Norfolk.

Endeavour International announced a find a 30 miles further to the north east that could potentially be as high as two trillion cubic feet of gas.

Both companies said they would be exploring other nearby potential sites.

Dana said the site, known as Platypus, was the first of its three wells in the UK southern North Sea to promise success.

Chief executive Tom Cross said: "The Platypus gas field is situated in shallow water in close proximity to existing infrastructure.

"These are all very positive factors in respect of moving ahead with a gas development."

    'Largest gas fields'

Dana is already producing gas from its Johnston, Victor and Anglia fields.

It is also developing the Babbage field which is expected to produce its first gas in mid 2010.

Endeavour said its drillers had found the gas at a site called Cygnus.

They believe it is one of the largest gas fields ever discovered in the United Kingdom sector of the southern North Sea.

William L Transier, Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and President, said the company believed the gas could be recovered at lower cost than normal and it would reach peak production quicker.
