Swedish Battery Breakthrough Could Boost A Tesla’s Range By 70%

A demo project in The Big Apple is alreaThe Tesla Model 3 can drive for about 220 miles on its sizeable battery pack. The extended range option pushes that all the way to 310 miles. New battery tech could boost those numbers by another 70%.
That’s a massive increase in range that would see the base Model 3 rolling for nearly 375 emission-free miles and the extended range smashing the 500-mile mark. And it could be a reality very soon thanks to new battery packaging tech that’s been developed in Sweden.
Christine Lampe-Önnerud and Cadenza Innovation have been working for the past four years on something she described to Business Insider as “an energy Lego brick for engineers.”
Cadenza has created a “new way to package energy.” Their design allows the cells to be packed more tightly inside a special ceramic casing. That, in turn, is wrapped in aluminum which provides additional protection and acts as a big heat sink. The result, Lampe-Önnerud says, is a battery pack that’s much more energy-dense.
With a stack of freshly-approved patents in hand, Cadenza is now ready to start making deals. Tesla is definitely on the company’s radar, and they’ve had talks, but Elon Musk and Co. are focused on meeting delivery goals right now. The timing isn’t right to introduce a major new technology, according to Lampe-Önnerud.
She’s quick to add that Cadenza has spoken to every major player in the EV game and they’re all very interested. And, like Tesla, Cadenza isn’t limiting its battery design to the automotive sector.
They’re also pitching it as a way to improve and stabilidy being discussed.
