Yeah there have been a few stories like that. But how many hard drives and flash drives have been thrown away since 2013? Hundreds of millions at least, surely.

It's definitely not impossible and there are certainly discarded hard drives out there with missing bitcoin on them - just the laws of probability make it pretty unlikely that he'd find one, let alone more than one. And the time it would take to recover the data would seem to be pretty prohibitive. Unless you know where to look, like this guy and his landfill, the odds would have to be pretty slim.
