In today's Financial Review (24/9/08) under a section headed "Small Caps" Cellestis rates a mention. The article is covering three "biotechs" Acrux, Cellestis and Biota. On Cellestis it says:
"Cellestis, which is capitalised at $206 million, has a technology that was initially developed at the CSIRO and then fostered at CSL. The diagnostic technology for tuberculosis was then brought into the Cellestis vehicle by company founders Tony Radford and Jim Rothel in late 2000.
Cellestis's blood-based diagnostic test for tuberculosis infection provides a simple 'yes' or 'no' result to the doctor and the company says the new test is a modern replacement for the 114 year old tuberculin skin test.
While up to 2 billion people are infected with tuberculosis, in most cases bacteria is contained by the body's immune system without any symptoms of the infection.
In the developed world, tuberculosis eradication strategies have focused on identifying and treating people with the latent infection Cellestis says its test have been proved to accurately detect infected patients, enabling treatment for those at risk of developing the disease.
The company posted its first profit in 2008 - earning $2.26 million due to a 72 pr cent jump in revenue to $19.6 million.
During the year, the company won FDA approval for its advanced tuberculosis diagnostic product, established a Japanese office and moved to a larger distribution and customer service facility in the US. In Japan, Cellestis's technology was recognised as the preferred choice of test in contact investigations.
Analysists said the Cellestis diagnostic was easier and more accurate than other tests on the market. Although some in the market have expressed concerns that the experience of Cellestis management is weighted too heavily towards science rather than corporate business, the potential for the product is healthy, with 40 million tests conducted each year. Some predict that Cellestis, with its superior technology, could snare about a third of the market"
