The preschool funding can only be used to reduce fees in government preschools. Those government preschools must pass on 75% of the increased funding to reduce fees.
LDC centres, such as G8 receive an amount for each child attending in the year prior to starting school. The funds can only be spent on resources, the development of an early childhood education program based on the EYLF or develop staff, including upgrading qualifications.
The amounts received per child for LDC are: equity enrolments $675 and non-equity enrolments $450. The average number of children in a centre, in their year prior to formal schooling, is around 25. Comparing the amount of funding received for those children, against the salary of a qualified early childhood teacher (which is a requirement for receiving funding) there is a shortfall.
As yet Labor have nor released details, of their preschool funding package and there are many hurdles for them to cross before then, so it really is pie in the sky.
