Political parties can no longer speak for a majority of its constituents because most of our outstanding major issues require high degrees of social change so no one party can be representative for all in that party, hence the major divisions occurring.

The better path would be to drastically reduce the size of the senate and house of reps and have on-line voting for issues these houses cannot (or will not) resolve.

I know the argument will be about the costs of running referendums and they rarely get a positive result, but it can't be worse than getting discussion stifled, and years of debate, uncertainty, no tangible outcomes etc etc. - those costs must far outweigh the cost of running referendums.

In this way people are no longer hampered by party ideology and have a clear conscience vote in the direction of the country.

This would be truley representative of the people.
