There seems to be some confusion here on what they were trying to achieve. The test was designed to compare termite repellency and efficacy after impregnating the timber. In this situation Permethrin is a standard and commonly used in plywood impregnation for container shipping etc. They then measured the amount of wood consumed by the termites (a measure of efficacy).
Imidacloprid, Fipronil and Bifenthrin are commonly used as barrier sprays and not as baits for termites (but they are used as baits for cockroaches and ants). Fipronil was recently approved for dusting in a similar fashion to the old Arsenic dust. Bifenthrin is also used as an impregnated blanket under slab constructions.
Termite baits are commonly based on insect growth regulators because of their slow kill which is desirable.
Be careful about assuming Termilone might be suitable for all termite uses. It appears to be suitable for timber impregnation. Whether it can withstand the rigours of 5 or more years testing in soil is another matter. Such a compound (because it is a volatile oil) is also unlikely to be suitable for baits. i guess we need to wait and see what the testing brings.
Cheers
